Chapter Seventeen

Stuffing a blanket underneath the doorway to cut out the light, hoping everyone would assume she was still fast asleep, Aero began to work. She regularly looked up things like information, pictures or books on her laptop for a school project. The Internet really was an amazing place but searching for a set of obscure symbols was like looking for a needle in the biggest haystack she could imagine. What would she search for, what was the topic?

After over an hour of trawling through hundreds of artists, she concluded that, whilst they were all no doubt hugely talented, she had got nowhere. The search was impossible! Only then did she notice the stillness of the house. Everyone else had gone to bed. Sneaking downstairs, painfully aware of her clumsiness, Aero navigated successfully to the kitchen and prepared herself a tray of cookies and a hot chocolate. Chocolate made everything better. She needed to feed her brain and she could think of no better way.

Aero took out the pack of playing cards and held them in her hand. The box her grandmother had left her had to be old. Maybe even an heirloom, hence why her grandmother had left it to her. Her aunt had hinted at artistry. Something old and artistic. Her aunt should seriously have given her a better clue. Did she have any idea how many artists there were in the world, both dead and alive? Aero munched on another cookie and wrapped her fingers around the cup of hot chocolate. As she inhaled the delicious sweet smell, she felt the fog in her brain begin to lift. The information in her mind shuffled around rather like the playing cards… historic, something artistic, and symbols.

She typed old historic symbols into the search engine and found herself rewarded with hundreds of images. Nazi symbols, Greek, even witchcraft. Her family had nothing to do with Hitler, that much she felt sure of, but times like these made her wish she had paid more attention to her mother. She was always going on about their family history. Who had married who, where they grew up. Aero had to be honest, she’d thought it all boring and pointless until now. Most of the time, history sounded something like a foreign language to her. Even her own family’s seemed alien to her.

What are you, what do you mean? she whispered into the computer.

Maybe she just needed something more to narrow down the search. She added the words, herbs and Westwoods. There! She almost shouted out loud, and then remembered that everyone else was still sleeping. On the box from her grandma, each of the symbols were subtly different. Yet each of them had one part, which looked the same. A foundation of some sort that all the others grew from. This base symbol on the cards caught her eye. On the screen in front of her was something that looked similar but not exact. Still, it gave her more than enough. A glimmer of hope.
